BTSidekick for BlackBerry

BTSidekick is one of the many applications out there that will help you, as they say, "find the things you need while on the move". It offers quick access to various businesses located near you, all categorized for convenience. It takes 411, and the map that is probably plastered across your dash, out of the equation and puts rapid, easy searches in your hands. Of course, you should make sure you concentrate on the road, not the screen - pull over to conduct your search. Hit the Jump for more Details...

About BTSidekick

BTSidekick is powered by CPSA (Canadian Professional Sales Association), based out of Toronto. It's currently in beta (version1.0.1) and is available on the following BlackBerry smartphones, running OS 4.2 or higher; Bold, Curve, Curve 8900, 88xx, Pearl and Pearl Flip. There's no word yet as to when other models will see some support. CPSA also offers a TravelSave program, which helps save you money on hotel, car rentals, insurance and more. I'm not a member, so I don't know the exact savings. Pretty sneaky to have a travel app AND a travel program, no?

The application uses both GPS and cellular triangulation to detect where you are, making it available for non GPS-enabled BlackBerrys. Using BTSidekick is pretty straight forward. The top border of the menu will show the time, selected action and location. The left border of the application houses your main functions. From top to bottom they are;

Nearby: You location is automatically detected by "powerful location detection and scanning technology".

Select Location: You can set your location by Postal/Zip Code or by Address/City & Country. BTSidekick provides coverage in over 20 countries.

Settings: Not much here, except for switching the unit of measurement from metric to imperial and access to the CPSA Savings Program.

Share: Send an email about BTSidekick to a contact of your choice. For this, it also offers quick access to your address book as well.

About: Basic information about BTSidekick

Searches are automatically organized by category, allowing you to search for hotels, movie theatres, post offices and more. If you can find what you are looking for, they've included an "Absolutely Anything Else" section where you can manually enter what you need. Search results can be viewed by list (closest entry listed at the top) or via Google Maps. Each entry lists the entry's name, category, address and phone number. Some entries are adorned by the CPSA logo, which will indicate their membership rate at that location. After you decide where you want to go, you can use the "Driving Directions" feature to view the turn by turn directions.

Conclusion

While I was impressed by the quick nearby search options and ease of use, I preferred using Poynt, as it offers much more functionality. I enjoy watching trailers, having mapping choices and searching using White Pages. For those who want a simple, yet powerful application, without the advanced features, then BTSidekick is for you. The application is free and can be picked up by heading to BlackBerry App World. Now quiet down back there! Don't make me turn this car around!

Pros

  • functions are easy to master

  • View nearest location, maps and turn by turn instructions

  • View savings for CPSA members

Cons

  • Missing advanced functions that some users may need

How To: Preview Email in List View on the Pre

Go into your inbox and pinch out on a message (like the zoom in gesture). This will expand the message without having to open the message. You can do this on multiple emails at once also.
or
An easier method is to perform the gesture _across_ the message. That is, start in the middle of the message and pinch out to the edges. Pinch in from the edges to minimize. That seems to work better than trying to pinch up-down or diagonally.

Dan Hesse: Pre supply still constrained, Android coming to Sprint

Sprint CEO Dan Hesse sat down at the Fortune-sponsored Brainstorm: Tech conference in Pasadena, California this week to talk about the future of mobile computing. And of course, the Palm Pre came up (would we be talking about it if it didn’t?). On the device, Hesse said that the launch was a success, but sales numbers were until recently very constrained by supply issues, not a lack of demand. And because of the initial limited launch, it’s going to take a while before they can declare the Pre a smash hit or not: “You won't know if we have a real hit on our hands until its been out three months, four months, five months ... It's too early to tell.”

Hesse also took up the defensive against claims of inordinately high return rates, taking the analysts to task for their speculation, “Most of the speculation I read is wrong.”

Lastly, there’s that other Linux-based mobile phone operating system: Android. Hesse commented that Android was not ready for prime time when it was released, and it’s taken to the latest 1.5 iteration and HTC’s fancy new UI for it to be up to snuff for Sprint. At least one new Android model will land on Sprint this year.

Installing Homebrew Apps: Desktop Drag 'n Drop, On-Device too!

Big Big news today: there are now two new ways to install homebrew apps on your Palm Pre!

Hit the Jump for more Details...

First up, the aptly-named "WebOS Quick Install", from Jason Robitaille.nbsp; It's a simple desktop Java-based app that you can download and install on a Mac, PC or Linux machine. First, install the webOS SDK (Update, version 1.1 has just been released and it uses the Recovery ROM - take a quick look at the notes on the linked post), then you just need to put your Pre into Developer Mode and then run the app on your desktop (Mac users note the small caveat in the readme file). You can drag and drop files downloaded.
NOTE FROM JASON ROBITAILLE:

WebOS Quick Install v1.1

This program is intended for use with WebOS applications that are in-testing, which under section 4.2 of the Palm SDK License Agreement allows for such unapproved applications to be installed on Palm devices. Applications installed with WebOS Quick Install have not be tested by Palm and are installed at your own risk.

This program is freeware, but not opensource. Feel free to share it with other testing forums.

I can be contacted at
support@canuck-software.ca

Also, if you'd like to help support this and my future software development efforts, I have a donation link setup on my website.
Enjoy! :-)

Requirements

  • Java 1.6
    • For Mac OS X, once you've installed Java 1.6, run /Application/Utilities/Java/Java Preferences. Then click and drag Jave SE 6 to top of both list, and exit the program. This will set Java 1.6 as the default version to use.

  • Novacom - As of v1.1, this now gets setup through WebOS Quick Install.

  • DevMode enabled
    • This can be done by typing "upupdowndownleftrightleftrightbastart", opening the DeveloperMode app, and enabling the feature.

Lastly, when you plug in the device, if you want to use WebOS Quick Install, choose the "Just Charge" option on the device.

Running WebOS Quick Install
  • Simply double-click WebOSQuickInstall.jar and (as long as Java is installed properly) it will launch

Features
  • Stylish easy-to-use GUI.

  • Cross-platform support (Windows, Mac OS X, Linux).

  • No Linux knowledge required.

  • No rooting required (or whatever getting-access-to-root setup is now called).

  • Support for multiple ipk file transfers.

  • Support for adding files both via filechooser popup and by dragging and dropping files onto the transfer queue.

  • Works with both USB-connected WebOS devices and the WebOS emulator.

  • Ability to hide/make visible the DevMode application in the launcher.

  • Full device information section.

  • Management of user-installed applications. Lists all user-installed applications and gives the option to uninstall those applications.

  • Custom file transfer. Transfers any user-chosen file to any directory on the Pre. Also supports drag and drop of a file from your computer to be transferred.

  • Quick-access link to the PreCentral homebrew forums.

  • Handy usage panel that explains the earlier-mentioned requirements.

  • Also new: Brian Jost has created an on-device file download and ipk install tool! It's called "fileCoaster"and it works pretty well. All you need to do here is browse to the PreCentral.net Homebrew App Forums on your Pre. If you're logged in, there will be a text field box next to every .ipk attachment - just tap that, copy it, and paste it into this app. Voila - you are downloading and installing homebrew applications without needing the desktop. It works on both the full forums and the mobile version.

    NOTE FROM BRIAN:
    ----------------------
    INSTALLATION
    ----------------------

First all you need to do is install the .ipk with the SDK (if you already have it and are familiar with the palm.bat files) or WebOS Quick Installer (if you do not have the SDK and like GUI's).
I STRONGLY RECOMMENDING INSTALLING fileCOASTER with WebOS Quick Installer!!!

    ----------------------
    HOW TO USE
    ----------------------
    1. Login to the homebrew forums from your pre (currently it is not set to use the mobile site as there is a bug that is preventing the viewing of the mobile homebrew-apps section from the pre browser).
    2. Select the application you want and copy the download link from the textbox on the forums (To copy tap the textbox on the forums until it turns yellow, once yellow hold the GESTURE area until the LED lights up. Once lit press c)
    3. Paste the URL into the application.
    4. Click download.
    5. After the download is complete it will begin the install process if the file is an .ipk

    ----------------------
    FILE STORAGE / TYPES
    ----------------------
You can also download any other file you want on the net including mp3's.

The files get stored into /media/internal/downloads and after you install the IPK it gets deleted to save space.

Images (jpg, png, jpeg, gif - get saved to the /media/internal/wallpapers folder or if you connect as usb drive the /wallpapers folder.) ** The files are not able to be seen in photo's application so I am trying to find out why **

MP3's and everything else get stored in the /media/internal/downloads folder (or if you connect your pre as a USB drive it will be in the /downloads folder) ** I have tested this successfully and was able to have the Music player recognize the new mp3 download **

    ---------------------
    MISC / LICENSE
    ---------------------
This was built using palms libraries however I had to trick the services into thinking this is a palm app by changing the appId so that we could use their services.

This application is AS IS and is only intended to be used to download beta applications from precentral.net. This is not an app catalog and you should use Palms App Catalog to sell your applications.

Apple Release iPhone 3.1 Beta 3 to Developers (Beta 2 Expiring Tues, July 28!)

sdk_hero

Apple has released iPhone 3.1 Beta 3 (7C116a) to developers via developer.apple.com, along with notification that iPhone 3.1 Beta 2 expires tomorrow, July 28 at 12am (device local time).

While Apple has previously released most of the betas on Tuesday, a desire to prevent the “pink screen of death” associate with expired betas perhaps necessitated an earlier release this time.

The OS weighs is said to weigh in at around 307MB. Updates to follow below as we get them:

According to WhenWillApple, you can now copy and paste videos into email (like you could images under 3.0) to get full resolution (not compressed like the share option). We’re guessing email box size will still be a restriction…

Also, Tethering Data now gets it’s own counter in Settings > General > Usage.

Wicked Wordpress App for BlackBerry V1.0 Released

I've mentioned this great application before here on the blogs, to which a lot of you picked up on and took interest in. Wicked Wordpress is, as the name states, a wicked wordpress application which goes head-to-head with the official Wordpress application and does so amazingly well.

After having used the application for quite some time now I can comfortably say that it is well ahead of the official application. However, one thing that may hinder Wicked is the fact that it is indeed a paid application where as the official Wordpress one is not. Wicked does offer a 14 day free trial though and is $30/year after that.

The added features such as twitter integration and built-in support for error messages really do make it worthwhile and Software updates & support are included. Important things for the hardcore Wordpress users out there. You can purchase the license straight from the BlackBerry app itself, and you can run it on 3 BlackBerry devices concurrently. Wicked requires a minimum OS version of 4.6.x. It simply will not work on older OS versions.

Leaked: OS 5.0.0.130 for Bold and Curve 8900!

This time around it's the BlackBerry Bold and Curve 8900 getting some 5.0 love in the form of OS 5.0.0.130. The builds don't have RIM internal apps installed (quincy) so no worries there, but also do not have the 5.0 version of BlackBerry Messenger built-in and you'll find some of the RIM apps (App World) don't want to work. Otherwise, I've been finding the Bold build to be real nice.

*OS Disclaimer - This is an unofficial release. If you choose to install, do so at your own risk and only if you're comfortable in the process of upgrading and downgrading your device software. It is quite normal during operating system development for certain features to be crippled or disabled while others are tested, and these beta builds often reflect that. They are not always better. Depending on your BlackBerry comfort level, it may be best for you to wait for community feedback on a build before deciding to download and install for yourself or simply wait for the next official release. If you require support, you will find it in our CrackBerry forums via our extremely knowledgeable community base - do not contact your carrier or RIM for Beta OS technical support (their first course of action will be to advise you to downgrade to a supported OS). Follow the links below for more information and instructions. *

Why is Software in Applications List in BOLD Text?

As it turns out, any applications listed in bold in the Applications list are those which have modified permissions. Permissions allow applications to access your device (allowing Interactions, Connections and User Data to be accessed). So if you have downloaded something and changed the deafult permissons, it will appear in bold in the list. Pretty cool (and perplexing) stuff. This is one of the most asked questions by a lot of BlackBerry users, and Al did a great write up of the answer. Head over to CIO.com and '_new'>check out the full article.

Google Finally Provides Latitude to iPhone Users — Yeah, it’s a WebApp

Google Latitude — the service that either allows you to keep track of your friends or be stalked by stalking stalker types, depending on your point of view — is finally available for the iPhone and iPod touch. No, it’s not built into Google Maps as part of iPhone 3.1 with push update capability. No, it’s not built into Google Mobile app. No, it’s not even set up as an iPhone app in and of itself.

Google Latitude is a WebApp and it runs in Mobile Safari using the iPhone 3.0 geoLocation feature.

Hit the Jump for more Details...

Apparently Apple, in their infinitely-looped wisdom, hasn’t yet deigned (or Google wouldn’t yet offer them the chance?) to build it into Maps, and Apple decided it would be too confusing to users to have another app on the iPhone thats shows the same Google maps. (And it’s not when simply framed by mobile browser chrome? Sigh.)

While Google inarguably makes among the best iPhone WebApps in the business, this doesn’t strike us an ideal solution. Still it is a solution for iPhone users desperate to get their Latitude on. Until Apple gets their act together on this, here’s official word from the blog:

Our Latitude web app provides all the core functionality you might expect: you can see the location of your friends on a map and modify your privacy settings so that you control how your location is shared and with whom. In fact, if my friends and colleagues back in London haven’t yet noticed my absence, they’ll see in Latitude that I’m currently vacationing on the beach in Australia. Hi guys, remember me!?

[...] To try Google Latitude, type google.com/latitude into your iPhone’s browser. And if you miss the experience of launching the app directly from your home screen, you can add a bookmark to the home screen by opening Latitude in Safari and tapping the + icon > Add to Home Screen > Add.

webOS 1.1: Tons of Undocumented Features

PreCentral.net is currently tracking all the undocumented improvements to webOS 1.1 on the Palm Pre in this forum thread, (and here too), the stuff not covered in the changelog.  Well, I'm here to say that there are plenty:

  • Changed sound for notifications - You still can't change them yourself, but the new sound is much richer, if a little quieter
  • Animated drop down menus - they look really slick and really change the experience. The Context menus also have some nice animation.
  • Additional photo upload options - you can now upload a photo to either Facebook or Photobucket (not new - thanks commenters!)
  • Lots of Photo app improvements. A more distinct bar between all photos and your albums in the photo app, plus they're calling the Screenshot album "Screen Captures." The preview thumbs also slide in from the right.  Faster photo rendering. Overall the Photos app feels much more fully baked.
  • Emailing Memos - The memo app now has a menu option to email a memo.
  • A new font for the Browser - uses Palm's system font and, truly, it looks fantastic.
  • Disabled the key combo in browser to open in a new card.  Boo-urns.
  • Javascript interpreter Performance upgrades - this will speed up virtually everything and is great news
  • Sporadic reports of speed improvements both in the browser and system-wide, but it's always tough to know if these are real or just perceived
  • Seems to have better Gmail handling - not failing when you tap on a notification for an email you'd already archived on the desktop
  • A new icon for AIM
  • more more more!  If you find some, post in this thread and we'll update this list as they come in.
  • More auto-complete / auto correct entries in the dictionary.
  • With the slider open, the Center button now turns on the screen, where as before you had to hit a keyboard key or the power button.

Although a lot of homebrewers are going to need to re-patch a lot of stuff (Check this thread for a list of homebrew busts), the homebrew tethering solution still appears to work.  We're also tracking webOS 1.1 bugs in this thread.

Of course, the wish-list of stuff that wasn't added is still a mile long, but hey, we're at 1.1 less than 2 months after launch - this is tasty stuff, Palm.  Keep 'em coming.

Palm has released webOS 1.1 to the Exchange-loving masses, so sayeth the official Palm Blog and excitedly noted in our forums.  The key updates are precisely what we predicted earlier this month, to wit:

  • IT-initiated remote wipe
  • Required PIN with complexity
  • Device wipe after a certain number of failed PIN attempts
  • Auto-lock
  • Improved digital certificates

More interesting, we had also heard tell that there would be a smattering of other bugfixes, battery performance improvements, and UI enhancements.  Palm's knowledge base has a list of fixes, which we've included after the break, but there might be some subtler stuff around.  So we've started a thread in our Palm Pre forums, "webOS 1.1 is out! What have you noticed?" to track all the updates - After you update your Pre, get to poking around and report back with your findings there!

We had heard that the expected date was July 22nd, but also mentioned that these dates are hard to call, so no big surprise that it took a bit longer.

Oh, and Palm has re-enabled full iTunes sync with iTunes 8.2.1. It's on, Apple!

Have you installed yet?  Let us know how that's working out for you in the comments!

Thanks to Jaer for the image!

Update 1: did we mention it's on?  Check out how Palm phrased the iTunes support, emphasis ours:

Oh, and one more thing: Palm webOS 1.1 re-enables Palm media sync.

There's only one way to describe such brazenness: BOOM!

Version information

  • Version: webOS 1.1.0

  • Release date: 23 July 2009

  • Configuration: Sprint 1.7

New applications

NFL Mobile Live from Sprint

  • Watch or listen to live NFL games right on your phone.

Feature changes to existing applications

Calendar

  • For Calendar accounts you create on your phone, the default reminder intervals are 15 minutes for timed events and one day for all-day events. A few notes:

    • This change applies only if software version 1.1 was on your phone when you bought it, or if you did a partial or full erase on your phone and signed in to your Palm profile again after updating to version 1.1. If you simply update your phone to software version 1.1, the default reminder intervals in Calendar do not change.

    • This change applies only to Calendar events you create on your phone, not to events that are synchronized to your phone from an online account.

Camera

  • The Photos application opens more quickly when launched from the camera.

Clock

  • Enhanced support for time zones in Clock.

  • When you set an alarm in Clock, an alarm icon appears in the notification area at the bottom of the screen. Tap the icon to display alarm details. Alarm details include the following:

    • If the alarm is set for the current day, the alarm time appears.

    • If the alarm is set for tomorrow, the alarm time and "Tomorrow" appear.

    • If the alarm is set for any day other than today or tomorrow, the day of the alarm appears.

Contacts

  • Friends added and deleted in Facebook on the web are now correctly added and deleted in the Facebook account in Contacts on the phone.

  • As soon as you create or makes changes to a Google contact on the phone, the phone begins a sync to reflect those changes in Google on the web.

Email

  • When you set up an Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) email account, you can enter the mail server name as an IP address.

  • Support for self-signed certificates with multiple common names has been added.

  • When you reply to an email in HTML format using an EAS account, the formatting of the sender's original message is now retained in the reply.

  • Palm's EAS implementation now supports several Exchange ActiveSync Policies, including the following:

    • PIN/Password Required. IT administrators can ensure a password is assigned to the phone. Administrators can also specify the minimum length of the password.

    • Inactivity timeout. IT administrators can ensure that an inactive phone goes into a locked state after a certain time period. You cannot set a higher timeout interval for your phone, but you can set a shorter interval.

    • Remote Wipe. IT Administrators can remotely erase all data on a phone from their Exchange console. IT administrators can also have the device wipe itself if an incorrect password is entered more than a specified number of times.

Messaging

  • You can enter emoticons in new text, multimedia, and instant messages. Emoticons also display in incoming messages.

  • If you set the phone to use a 24-hour time format, the message times shown in a conversation appear in 24-hour time.

  • If you go into an IM account's preferences, all the options are available even if you are signed in to the account. You can tap Remove Account to delete the account, enter a new password to update the password, or tap Sign In to sign in with your updated password. Previously, you needed to sign out of the account before you could use these preferences.

  • When you delete an IM account, a message now appears asking you to confirm that you want to delete the account.

Phone

  • When multiple missed call notifications are displayed on the dashboard, the time of the most recent missed call is shown.

  • When you slide the ringer switch off, a bell icon with a slash is displayed. Previously, the icon was a speaker with a slash.

  • In Phone Preferences, the Show Contact Matches preference is now turned on by default. When typing on the keyboard in the phone app, the phone automatically displays both the numbers being entered and any contact matches for the characters entered.

System

  • Improved functionality of person reminders. A person reminder is a notification that you create in a contact entry. The notification appears when you have a call or exchange an email, text, multimedia, or IM message with a contact.

  • Resolves an issue preventing media sync from working with latest version of iTunes (8.2.1).

  • When you enter a search term in Card view or the Launcher to perform a universal search, if you select the Wikipedia web search option, results are shown in the Wikipedia Mobile site instead of the Desktop site.

Web

  • You can now use symbols from the symbols table (Sym Sym key icon + key) when you enter text into a web page dialog box.

  • If you have a page open at a certain zoom level, leave the page, and use the onscreen Back Web Back button button or the back gesture to return to the page, the zoom level is restored right away.

  • A new gesture is now available that works the same as the onscreen Forward Web Forward button button. To move forward through open web pages, make a short swipe left to right in the gesture area.

  • When using the Wikipedia drop-down search feature in the address bar, results are shown in the Wikipedia Mobile site instead of the Desktop site.

  • When you tap a link, the link appears highlighted to indicate it has been activated, even if it takes a moment for the linked page to open.

YouTube

  • After you enter search text, you can tap the Search Search icon icon to perform a search. You still have the option of pressing Enter Enter key to perform the search.

Sprint gives online Palm Pre sales the nod of approval

We imagine all the die hards and overly-excitable types have already gotten their Palm Pre fix, but those of you who haven’t yet should know that you’re running out of excuses. As of today, the Pre is finally up for grabs through Sprint’s website, meaning not only is it possible to get a cutting-edge smartphone without having to put on a pair of pants, but you’ll also have successfully avoided contact with a human being in doing so. That is, until it comes time to mail off that $100 MIR but it’s all about the short term, right?

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Quick comparison: Samsung S9110 & LG GD910

There’s no doubt that Samsung launched its S9110 to outdo LG’s GD910. But will this entry spoil LG’s party? We take a quick look by comparing each of its specifications and give you our say as to which one you should go for. Hit the Jump for more Details...

Network:
S9110 – GSM 900 / 1800
GD910 – GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900; HSDPA – 2100
Result: GD910 has an upper hand here with a global GSM coverage and support for 3G.

Dimensions and Weight:
S9110 – 57.5 x 41.1 x 11.98 mm; 91g
GD910 – 61 x 39 x 13.9 mm; 84g
Result: 2mm is in no way thick and is hardly noticeable but you know, if slimness is what you crave for, S9110 is the way to go. Oh and as you can see, it’s a bit heavier too.

Display:
S9110 – 1.76-inch 256K colors capacitive touchscreen (176×220)
GD910 – 1.43-inch 256K colors capacitive touchscreen (176×220)
Result: Pretty much the same but a bigger screen like on S9110 is always welcome.

Camera:
S9110 – No
GD910 – Yes, CIF resolution
Result: S9110 does not have a camera and even a camera supporting CIF resolution in GD910 is a big plus. To top it, it can be used to carry out video calls.

Memory:
S9110 – 40MB internal
GD910 – No mention
Result: Samsung has confirmed 40MB internal memory but LG is yet to confirm. We presume it does not have it and will play music via Bluetooth.

Bluetooth:
S9110 – v2.1 with A2DP
GD910 – v2.0 with A2DP
Result: S9110 one ups GD910 on the Bluetooth front. v2.1 gives advantages like simple pairing, enhanced security and power efficiency.

Other features:
S9110 – E-mail (Outlook Sync), Voice recognition, Voice memo, MP3 player, Organizer, T9
GD910 – Waterproof, Voice recognition, Text to Speech (TTS), MP3 Player, Organizer, T9
Result: Both the devices offer on par features but S9110 gives e-mail support while GD910 trades in for its waterproof capability and TTS.

Battery:
S9110 – Li-ion 630mAh, no word on expected talk and standby time
GD910 – Li-ion, up to 2 hours of talk time and 247 hours of standby time
Result: We can’t really compare on this front since the data is inadequate but we expect Samsung’s watchphone to be in the same range.

Price:
S9110 – Around $640
GD910 – Around $1650 (rumored)
Result: Need we say more? If the rumored price turns out to be true for GD910, Samsung will easily be beat LG hands down.

Summing it up, we think price is going to be a crucial factor. Even though GD910 is superior in some areas, shelling out 1000 bucks more doesn’t justify it.

BlackBerry Messenger 5.0 Video: How to Add New Contacts by Scanning the Barcode Video

One of the coolest new features is definitely the ability to add contacts via the barcode scanner. Within BlackBerry Messenger, you can now generate a unique barcode (visual representation of your device PIN) which people can then scan using the camera of their device. No more hunting for PINs and trying to type them out (which is a pain in the butt to try and do while out for an evening of socializing... which is when a lot of PIN exchanges happen these days).
