Apple rumor roundup: Jobs returning with fanfare at end of June, WWDC to be full of iPhone goodness

A slew of Apple rumors are rolling off the press at an alarming rate. Most recent is a report from the Wall Street Journal confirming that international man of mystery Steve Jobs will be returning to Apple at the end of June. Jobs will return with a bang at a media event to coincide with a new product launch or a public event.Hit the Jump for more Details...

According to the WSJ, WWDC will still be a Schiller-run show with the new iPhone taking center stage. Duh. The new iPhone is expected to be available in early July, around the two year anniversary of the first iPhone (need to snag those early adopters whose contracts are expiring), and will feature a faster processor and video editing capabilities. If that is not enough of a confirmation of a new iPhone for you then turn your eyes to the retail marketplace where the third generation handset is reportedly appearing in inventory lists from Carphone warehouse as the iPhone V3 and at AT&T support as the iPhone Video. Several purported images have also emerged, as seen above. They all jibe but of course none have been verified as authentic at this point. Last but not least, the Financial Times is reporting that Apple plans to launch a low cost version of its iPhone at WWDC, priced at $149 or $99 with a contract in order to attract those Walmart shoppers increase its market share.

Sprint: Pre on Verizon in six months? Nope.

The back and forth continues. Following Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam’s comment that the Pre would be hitting VZW shelves “over the next six months or so”, Sprint issued a brief official statement confirming that its Pre exclusivity runs through the end of 2009, at least. While specifics of the exclusivity deal remain a mystery for the time being, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse has just elaborated on the situation a bit. According to Cnet, Hesse stated the following at a press event with regard to McAdam’s Pre comment:

They need to check their facts. That just is not the case. Both Palm and Sprint have agreed not to discuss the length of the exclusivity deal. But I can tell you it’s not six months.

So, Verizon customers, it looks like you have a bit more waiting than anticipated before you can get your webOS on — at least where the Pre is concerned.

LG enV Touch and Glance walk the Big Red carpet

So far in our coverage of these two Verizon-bound handsets by LG, feelings have certainly been mixed. The LG Glance — with its 1.3 megapixel camera, 2.5mm headphone jack, Bluetooth, VZ Navigator and slim frame — has not garnered much love on the pages of BGR. Seeing as it’s an entry-level feature phone of course, we really didn’t expect it to. The enV Touch on the other hand has been received much better. Sure there is the occasional GSM addict who scoffs at this CDMA kit despite dual 3-inch displays, full QWERTY keypad, 3.2 megapixel camera with a Schneider Kreuznach lens and auto-focus, 3.5mm headphone jack, Visual Voicemail and MicroSDHC support, but you can’t please everyone. The bottom line is whether or not these new LGs are your cup of tea, variety is a good thing… Just ask Hef. Right on queue, the LG enV Touch and LG Glance have both appeared on Verizon’s website and are now available for purchase through all channels — the former for $149.99 on contract after MIR and the latter for $49.99 on contract after MIR.

T-Mobile cuts handset prices, no MIR necessary!

The folks over at T-Mobile can be a little unpredictable sometimes. First, the company ditched the handset upgrade fee only to bring it back just a short while later. Then, out of the blue, new smartphone purchases absolutely had to be accompanied with data plans. T-Mo’s newest bag of tricks involves cutting the price on a number of handsets and doing away with that pesky mail-in rebate! Nothing beats that instant gratification when you think about how your laziness will sometimes keep you from purchasing a stamp and mailing in the proof of purchase. As of today, feel free to go nuts and spend your hard earned pay on the following deals:

Blackberry Curve 8900 — $149.99
Blackberry Curve 8320 — $74.99
Blackberry 8820 — $99.99
Sidekick 2008 — $99.99
Sidekick LX 09 — $199.99 ($249.99 new customers) \
T-Mobile Dash — $49.99 T-Mobile G1 all colors — $149.99

Where’s WiMAX?

With rumors of a Sprint-bound tri-mode CDMA/WiFi/WiMAX handset gaining traction, we thought it might be a good time to talk about what is as opposed to what could be. Sure, a tri-mode handset would be amazing but without official word from Sprint it’s still just speculation. 3G is so 2000 and late, Sprint is the only carrier with a live 4G network here in the US… So what’s up? Hit the Jump for more Details...

The following markets are live or will be live before 2009 is out, according to Sprint (alphabetical order):

Atlanta
Baltimore
Chicago
Charlotte
Dallas/Ft.
Worth
Honolulu
Las Vegas
Philadelphia
Portland
Seattle

At least the following markets will launch in 2010, according to Sprint:

New York
Boston
Washington, DC
Houston
San Francisco Bay Area

As far as hardware goes, the dual mode U300 is currently available and it supports both 3G and 4G. Other devices Sprint has stated will reach market throughout 2009 and 2010 include a single-mode 4G data card, embedded laptops, “Small-office-home-office devices”, 4G personal hotspot devices and a 4G phone. In other words, things have most definitely been slow going but Sprint finally appears to be kicking things into high gear. In fact, the company is poised to have a substantial 4G network in place with a respectable portfolio of devices before the competition even gets its feet off the ground.

Alltel drops 2-year contracts, keeps 2-year contract prices

If you live in Canada and are currently tied to a 3-year contract we suggest averting your eyes immediately. Beginning tomorrow, Chad’s crew will slice it’s top contract term in half from the standard two year deal to just one year. Subsidized handset prices however, will remain as they are now. Yep, 1-year contract, same handset subsidies. Awesome. The change will apply to each of the 91 divested. Hit the Jump for more Details...

The change will apply to each of the 91 divested markets — sorry, new Verizon customers — and will include markets to be gobbled up by AT&T. Paul Bowersock, Senior Sales & Operations Leader for the Alltel Divestiture Trust, had this to say:

Wireless customers have been waiting for an option like this for a long time. With a 1-year contract option, customers can take greater control over their wireless experience, having the flexibility to choose their contract length and the latest innovative handsets at the most competitive price possible.

Sounds good to us! The change applies to both new customers and existing contract renewals.

Flight Path - Free Games for Blackberry Storm(accelerometer, emulator)

It’s a very simple game but it might keep you entertained for at least a few minutes. Hit the Jump for more Details...

Are you ready to put yourself in the pilot’s seat? The goal of the game is to fly your plane through the center of the rings coming at you. You get points for every ring you fly through, and the closer you get to the center of the ring, the more points you get. When you fly through a ring, you will be evaluated on a scale of Perfect, Good and Sloppy. Get a lot of Perfects or Goods in a row, and you will build up your score multiplier which will give you even more points! It’s not that easy though, because the game ends once you miss three rings. There’s also another catch. The rings keep getting smaller the longer you fly! To fly, hold the BlackBerry like a steering wheel and rotate left and right. The more you rotate, the faster your plane will turn. How high of a score can you get?
