Nokia 3720 classic takes a licking and keeps on talking

Over the past few days, the folks over at Nokia have been putting an unknown handset through a variety of torture tests on video, presumably to whet our appetites for an imminent announcement. The poor little guy has been dunked in a pint, smacked with a golf club, punted through the air, drowned in a pool and even dropped two stories off a ladder — each and every time followed by the phrase “it’s still working!” Suffice it to say, this new Nokia kit is ruggedized and it fairs extremely well in a variety of real world accident scenarios. As many had assumed, it looks like said handset is shaping up to be the IP54-certified 3720 classic we first heard about last month. Specs were reported this morning as follows:

  • Water and dust resistant (IP54 certificate)

  • Battery life: over 2.5 weeks standby time

  • FM radio

  • Integrated flashlight

  • S40 OS

  • 2.2-inch QVGA display, 16M colors

  • 25MB internal memory

  • MicroSD card slot

  • Bluetooth

  • 3.2 megapixel camera

Pretty decent for a handset that can take a serious beating. Nokia will certainly be announcing this scrapper soon but for the time being, it’s rumored to be hitting the streets some time in September at an unknown price. Hit the jump for a few of our favorite 3720 torture test videos.

O2, Movistar to have exclusive rights to the Palm Pre in Europe

It wasn’t exactly a surprise but it looks like there’s finally some good news to report for Pre hopefuls across the pond. That news: O2 and Movistar have been announced as the exclusive European carriers for the Palm Pre. To be available in the UK, Ireland, Germany and Spain before the year is through, pretty much no other specific information was given as to when or for how much the device would retail for in each market. Those of you who might be interested in importing a GSM Pre take note — the specific UMTS/HSDPA bands that it will be packing have not yet been listed so keep those fingers crossed.

PopCap Working on Games for Pre

Bejeweled on the Pre. Zuma on the Pre. Peggle on the Pre. All this may someday come to pass. In a recent interview with Pixels to Polygons, Garth Chouteau, Senior Public Relations Director from PopCap Games discussed the future of his company, including the ripe-for-expansion mobile gaming industry. Addressing new platforms such as webOS and Android, Chouteau said (around 15:15 in the podcast):

We have plans to support the Pre, as well as Android. There are games in the works for those devices. But it is certainly a kind of splintering of the market in some ways. I guess what I would say is, we think about platforms or prospective platforms in a couple of ways. One is: is this device right for one or more of our games? Is this the right kind of device for our games? Will it be a fun experience, and frankly as fun as it is on other platforms? And also, what is the audience for this particular device? And then certainly, but certainly not insignificantly, what is the install base?

A total of 2,205 entries were submitted in the Cyber category from organizations worldwide from which 208 finalists were selected. Sony Ericsson “Twiggy” Walkman phone strikes a pose

We’re not exactly sure this upcoming handset from Sony Ericsson is deserving of renowned 90lb supermodel’s name — even as a codename — but slender form or not, the SE Twiggy is the star of a new round of live shots. Rumored to have been canceled (and it very well still might be), the Twiggy is a Walkman phone with a thin flip above the keypad common to various Sony Ericsson handsets over the years. In this new iteration, the face of the flip cover is home to a single touch-sensitive play/pause button. Nifty, but we would’ve liked to see forward and back buttons as well of course, as are present on the face of the W350. Beyond that, little is known about the music phone other than the fact that it has a 3.2 megapixel camera on the back.

How to: Sync Notes and Memos on the Pre (Sort of)

Want to sync Notes and Memos from your Pre to your Desktop and vice versa?
Hit the Jump for more Details...

I wish I could tell you that you could actually synchronize the notes from the Memos application on your Pre, but then I’d be lying to you. For whatever disappointing reason, the Pre in its current form does not support the synchronization of Memos and there’s not much that we can do about that. There are at least four different ways to deal with this. The first way is to just deal with it. The built-in memos application is both easy-to-use and plenty fast, plus it comes with type-to-search. But... it doesn’t sync with anything.

And then there’s Evernote, currently in free beta form in the App Catalog. You can take the notes in Evernote, in addition to snapping pictures to storing tasks, and all of it will sync with your PC, Mac, and even Evernote’s web services. But, as is so often the reality of betas, Evernote is a touch slow and occasionally buggy.

Have a Microsoft Exchange account? Then you can sync your notes, so long as you’re willing to make them notes attached to your tasks. And we know what you’re thinking, it’s kind of hacky. And we agree, it is hacky, and we shouldn’t have to stoop to using applications Tasks to sync our memos. Palm, are you listening?

Lastly, there’s email. If you’re a Gmail user, you can send messages to yourself with the subject prefix of “Note:”, and then using Gmail’s filters and labels you can have your notes automatically sorted into folders on the Pre. It’s a great magical sync and lets you use the Pre’s fantastic email program, but like the aforementioned Tasks notes syncing, it’s a hacky work-around that we should have to deal with.

So there’s four solutions, and we’re sure there’s more out there. We want to know, how do you sync your memos?

Nokia N97 gets a 15% price cut from Amazon

Sure it hit the street less than a month ago but that’s plenty of time to rope in the early adopters when it comes to hot new high-end handsets. As such, Amazon.com has just dropped the price on Nokia’s new flagship handset to $599.99 with free shipping; still a bit high for some but definitely inching closer to attainability. While this isn’t the best advertised price we’ve seen thus far for the Nokia N97 — Nokia USA had it on sale for $594 late last month — it is the lowest total price including taxes so far. Any takers?

Also of note: Amazon.com dropped the price of the N79 to $300 lining it up with the 5800XM and E71, and the N85 is currently listed at $330. All are unlocked of course, including the N97, and waiting for your SIM card of choice.

Enhanced Gmail Plug-in for BlackBerry currently in the works

If you’re a Gmail user with a BlackBerry this is going to be a proud moment for you, no question. It’s ok to admit it — we’ve all shed a tear or two when thinking about just how poor Gmail integration is on the BlackBerry platform. Read status doesn’t sync, no access to folders/tags and so on. Dry those eyes though, BlackBerry fans, because it looks like RIM is finally planning to start cooking with gas. Rumor has it the Canadian company is hard at work on an “Enhanced Gmail Plug-in” that will add various functionality to Gmail integration. Rumored functions include:

  • See your Gmail based emails in Conversation View for simple topic management

  • Add and remove labels and stars to emails to keep inbox organized

  • Archive and report as spam actions for mailbox management on the go

  • Search your entire Gmail inbox

The plug-in is being beta tested right now internally and amongst a lucky few outside the company. Mmmmm.

Samsung i7500 Galaxy hits UK this month

Sure, we might be a bit more anxious for the Hero, G1 v2 or the Morrison at this point, but let’s not forget Samsung’s first Android-powered handset — the Galaxy i7500 — has yet to see the light of day. Though it might not be the most exciting handset in the world, the i7500 certainly will be the best-spec’d Android handset when it launches. While we know it will be hitting T-Mobile at some point here in the US, it looks like our friends across the pond will be first to enjoy this sweet smartphone with an O2 release coming some time this month. Big bright touchscreen, 8GB of internal storage, 5 megapixel camera with flash, 3.5mm audio jack and Android 1.5 all wrapped in a 12mm-thin case… Fair enough.

Orange to finally launch LG GD910 watch phone next month

More interesting news from the UK today as it looks like LG’s would-be-highly-anticipated-if-not-for-the-insanely-high-rumored-price-tag GD910 watch phone is set to become a reality next month. Orange has reportedly confirmed that LG’s Dick Tracy-esque wrist gear will hit store shelves some time in August as an exclusive, though Orange exclusivity will only be for “a limited time”. The carrier hasn’t yet pinned a price on the touchscreen GD910 watch phone and we don’t blame them considering it’s rumored to be in the £1,000 range (about $1,612 at today’s exchange rate) on a pay-as-you-go plan or SIM-only. And you thought the Nokia N97 was expensive. For the sake of our British friends’ wallets, let’s hope the rumored price is way high and this little HSDPA-ready wristwatch drops with a slightly less ridiculous price tag. As for availability on this side of the Atlantic — don’t hold your breath.

BlackBerry App World To Hit Italy, France, Germany and Spain This Month; Brazil and India Coming Soon

In a recent interview with Bloomberg, RIM's VP of Global Alliances, Jeff McDowell, went on record to say that App World would be launching later this month in Italy, France, Germany and Spain and that it will also provide access to countries such as Brazil and India in coming months.

App World's catalogue has doubled since its launch on April 1st, now offering over 2,000 apps, but that's still way behind Apple's App Store which hit the 50,000 app milestone. Though according to McDowell, RIM is "very happy" with the volume of app downloads generated by App World and went on to say, "I don't think it matters whether it's 40,000 or 2,000, you've still got a broad range of choice."

BlackBerry OS 5.0 - Some More Screencaps of New Features

OS 5.0

OS 5.0. It's the next incremental evolution in BlackBerry device software and it's "officially" coming to a BlackBerry smartphone near you hopefully soon. We were told at WES we should see it hit late summer / early fall (the rollout is expected to be for all devices that are getting it at once, which means it'll likely take a bit longer to get here as they need the green light across the board before they release it).

Hit the Jump for more Details...

I meant to get this posted a couple weeks back, but newer versions of 5.0 (.110 and more recent) show even further tweaks to the feature offering, like the ability to submit feedback on applications, choose your default mapping application, choose to enable/disable data while on a call (3G devices), the addition of Sounds and Ringtones to Options as well as a dedicated homescreen icon and more options when doing a handheld wipe. You can check out the screencaps below for a first and hand look and follow the links for more OS 5.0 related content.

iPhone 3.1 Beta Walkthrough

iPhone 3.1 Beta 1 has just been released, and unlike the major new version that was iPhone 3.0, it’s still unclear how many features — compared with bug fixes — will be added. However, enterprising developers have already discovered at least a few things we can all look forward too.

So, here’s a iPhone 3.1 Beta Walkthrough, and we’ll keep it updated as/if Apple releases future betas.

Hit the Jump for more Details...

Home Screen

iphone_30_icon_home_screenThe jigglies — what Dieter lovingly calls the little dance icons do when you hold them down long enough to make them moveable and rearrangeable — now make the iPhone vibrate once to further indicate the change of state. Whether or not this will somehow factor in to the iPhone 3GS accessibility features is uncertain.

Voice Control

iphone_30_icon_voicecontrolVoice Control, after holding down the Home button for several seconds, let you speak simple commands to place calls and control music. In iPhone 3.1, it will also work over Bluetooth.

The exact process isn’t clear yet, but it’s hard to imagine anything other than holding down the call button on a Bluetooth headset function similarly to how the Home button currently works.

iPhone 3.0 Voice Control

Messages

iphone_30_icon_messagesAfter being present in iPhone 3.0 Beta 1 through Beta 4, before being stripped out in Beta 5, AT&T users will again find MMS functionality restored to the interface. However, it’s not functional without hacking the carrier file, and it’s unknown if it will survive until release or be stripped out again if AT&T still isn’t ready for the feature to go live.

iphone_30_photos_share_mms

Calendar

iphone_30_icon_calendarCalendar gets a minor tweak in iPhone 3.1. Now event alerts also display the location of the event in the popup. Presumably, this is now considered important glance-able information.

iphone_31_calendar_alert_location

Photos

iphone_30_icon_videoVideo trimming is now non-destructive. Previously, if you trimmed a video, it was automatically saved over the original, meaning you could never undo or go back to the full clip. Now, a Save As… dialog gives you the option of preserving the original and creating as many version copies as you want (an short clip to email, a longer one to share to YouTube, and the full clip to sync and bring into iMovie, for example).

iPhone 3.1: Video Editing: Save As...

Phone

iphone_30_icon_phoneCopy and Paste comes to the Phone Keypad. Just tap and hold and the input area will change from dark blue to light blue, and the Copy Paste menu will pop up.

iphone_30_icon_cut-copy-pasteReportedly, the iPhone Paste feature is “smart” enough to change alphanumeric phone numbers to pure numbers (i.e. 1-800-FLOWERS to 1-800-356-9377).

iphone_31_phone_keypad_paste

When Will it Ship?

If history is any indication, iPhone 2.0 was released on July 11, 2008, and iPhone 2.1 followed some two months and 4 betas later on September 12, 2008 hot on the heels of Apple’s Let’s Rock introduction of the 2nd generation iPod touch. Will we have to wait for another new iPod and music event before we see 3.1?

Our guess is Apple will try to get 3.1 out earlier to fix a few of the more onerous bugs, but as always, only Jobs knows for sure…

Note on Using Beta Software

Unlike iPhone 2.0 Betas, where access seemed much more limited and leaks were few and far between, 3.1 like 3.0 seems to be on every iPhone users want-now list. Also, unlike 2.0 when many devs were seasoned pros, now Apple is touting thousands upon thousands in the program, some seemingly happy enough to enable 3.0 access for the general user base.

However, betas are intended for developers to test and report back on. They’re not as stable, not as snappy, not as feature-complete and anyone trying to use them as a production OS on their main (or worse, only) device is likely to have something less than an ideal experience. People trying to use it as such may wish they could go back to iPhone 3.0 almost as much as they wished for 3.1. Think thrice before taking the plunge.
