those strange little black icon badges that have suddenly popped up on your Phone, Email, iPod, and perhaps other apps? Yeah, that’s because you installed Backgrounder, and that’s how Backgrounder shows you which applications, built-in or user-enabled, are currently running background tasks (multitasking).

The Three Different Type of Android Phones

We've been suggesting that there's a difference between Google and Android for quite some time now. And it actually turns out that we were right (kind of)! Specifically, there are three different types of Android phones that can offer three entirely different experiences. So though some Android phones may look exactly alike, they could very well be the same device running three different versions of Android. Hit the jumps for more details....

Here's the specifics

The Obligation Free Option: device manufacturers can download a free version of Android, load it onto their devices and provide access to as many or as few apps as they want. But the manufacturers cannot preload popular Google applications, like Gmail or Google calendar.

The Small Strings Option: Same as Option 1, except that manufacturers sign a distribution agreement to include Google applications on the phone. Of the 18 to 20 phones coming out this year, Mr. Rubin said, 12 to 14 subscribe to this option.

The Bigger Strips Option (or the No Censorship Version): This option is the "Google Experience" Option. You can determine the phones in these categories by the Google logo (like the T-Mobile G1). Google Applications are included, Android Market access cannot be blocked. Of the phones coming out this year, five or six belong to this category, Mr. Rubin said.

PhoneLog: Cool freeware for documenting calls

Every once in awhile I come across some really neat freeware that I think you folks could benefit from. Hit the Jump for more Details...

PhoneLog is a freeware app from InfinityBall (click for more screenshots) that simply logs your call log directly to your calendar app.

This is all done instantly in the background with no noticeable performance issues--it just works seamlessly and efficiently which is the best kind of WM app. After a call, in your calendar it will say "Talked to " with the start/end times and call duration. The info shows up as a simple entry in your cal and you can even assign it a custom category.

The app does require .NET compact framework 3.5 and has many configuration options such as log missed calls, all calls, run on startup and even log your text messages (!) Very cool stuff. Get it here.

1Password touch 2.0 Now Available

Hit the Jump for more Details...

A former pick of the week for me, and one of my most-used Mac and iPhone apps, has just seen the latter, mobile version updated. I had a chance to try out 1Password touch 2.0 [Free - iTunes link], and the new ability to sync Wallet Items, along with an entirely new, very robust way to sync over Wi-Fi, work the way such things ought.

If you loves security, and want the ability to take your super-strong, pseudo-random passwords, as well as credit cars, debit cards, and all that new goodness, with you, give it a try.
