With BerryScanner you can listen to fire and police scanners on your Blackberry Storm. While not made specifically for the Blackberry Storm’s touchscreen, it works well and I have had no issues using it. Simply select the country, state, and select the police department you wish to listen to and click play.The options on it or great also. You can choose to start and stop the stream any time you wish.

In addition, you can route the audio through the bluetooth speaker, headset or speaker.

Q: Where on the Internet is the audio coming from?

A: All of the scanner listed in the BerryScanner directory are hosted by RadioReference.com.

Q: Why aren’t there departments in my area in the directory?

A: The scanner feeds are provided by volunteers, if there are no scanners listed in your area it’s because no one in your area has volunteered to provide a scanner feed.

Q: I have a scanner I’m not using, how can I use it to provide a feed and get it listed in the app?

A: If you’re interested in providing a feed, go to http://www.radioreference.com/apps/content/?cid=5 for information.

Q: Why does the player buffer so much before it begins playing?

A: BerryScanner uses the BlackBerry Media Player (behind-the-scenes) to play the audio, it requires that 100kb of audio be buffered before it will begin playing. Unfortunately, the amount of data it requires to be buffered cannot be changed.

New & Upcoming in Homebrew: Active Home Screen, an App Installer, & a Fart App

We have some really good rumblings in the Homebrew scene.  The most exciting is that forum member greg_roll is currently rolling up a desktop installer for Windows for installing apps directly.  It's on version 0.8 now and coming along quite well.  You'll still need to put your Pre into Developer mode to use it, but stay tuned as this one progresses.

Also progressing: Active Home Screen for the Pre. Forum member mapara, like many of us, wished the Pre had a Today Screen like Windows Mobile and Android.  So he's started putting one together.  There are currently Weather and News Widgets, links to apps, and a small Task widget working.  This is still alpha, so no downloads yet, but the idea of making an app/card into a homescreen with its own widgets doesn't seem to shabby.

New Version of PreBrew 0.8 with Installer

pre dev wiki: Installing Apps on a Stock Pre (Post-Update 1.04)

Instructions:
======================
Download PreTool0.8 Installer.zip from PreTool 0.8 Installer.zip - Windows Live and extract the contents to a folder.
If you have a copy or webosdoctorp100ewwsprint.jar to the same folder. (If not it will be downloaded for you)

To install PreBrew double click "Setup.vbs" and follow the prompts.

A shortcut called "Drop File Here To Install Pre App" will be placed on your desktop.
Drop an IPK file over this shortcut to install the file to your Pre. (Ensure your Pre is in Developer mode)

Known Issues

Java may not download if it is not installed. Softpedia seems to cache your visit so I don't think downloads will work. If anyone knows of a fixed location for Java or can host it please let me know.

For some reason you can't drop IPKS on to the created shortcut in Windows Vista. To resolve this delete the shorcut and create a shortcut as below...

Palm Pre Hacked to Run on Verizon

Cleanser in our Pre forums has successfully hacked a Pre to operate on Verizon's network. Voice and text are a go, but data isn't up and working yet:

Only problem is that I can't get data to work. Apparently webOS is checking to see if the device is provisioned or not before allowing a data session to take place. So my next step would be to somehow bypass this provisioning check.

Apparently the difficult part is getting Verizon to take the MEID of the device (its unique identifier), this despite Verizon's claims of being an open network. It's early days, though, so we won't hold that against big V.

Evidence points toward Touch Diamond 2 on Sprint

We're about to really get into the ones and zeros here, and we're going to do so after the break, so bear with us. But the skinny is that it looks like legendary ROM chef Conflipper has found evidence that the HTC Touch Diamond 2 will be coming to Sprint. (That's just us slapping a Sprint logo on a TD2 up there, so nobody freak out just yet.)

Sure, that might not be a surprise, given that Sprint carries the original Touch Diamond and we've seen a Sprint-branded Touch Pro 2. But how Conflipper came to this conclusion is pretty cool, and he's shared it at ppcgeeks.

So Conflipper has found a site that will spit back some model information for HTC devices. We'll let him explain, from his ppcgeeks post:

HTC has a lot of different devices and to help with this they assign each carrier a certain range on the part number. And from that part number they assign ROM updates. That is easy to get. But what is the other way they track devices?

Its by certain codes. This helps them track certain Models, and each Carrier will be assigned a new model based on what they want. If Alltel wants their logo then it has to be a new model, and so the list gets to be quite large.

And, here's what Conflipper got out of a Sprint Touch Diamond:

The long and the short of it is that each HTC phone has an internal code name. If you've ever wandered around ppcgeeks or XDA Developers, you've seen them. The original CDMA Touch Diamond is the Victor, the original CDMA Touch Pro is the Herman. The GSM Touch Pro is the Raphael, etc.

Along with the model codenames come various suffixes, Conflipper says, depending on carrier. And he (or she) has found a tool online that will discern these codes. And from that, we've gleaned that Alltel has a suffix of L14. Sprint's suffix is R2. Cellular South's is D8.

Now, we know that one code name for the Touch Diamond 2 is the Topaz. That's not news. But Conflipper has been slipped a list of model names for the Topaz:

• Topaz#C
• Topaz#C-R2
• Topaz#D
• Topaz#TD
• Topaz-A2
• Topaz-C5
• Topaz-C9
• Topaz-D1
• Topaz-L3
• Topaz-L6
• Topaz-L9
• Topaz-N15

Notice any familiar suffixes there? Sure enough, there's the Topaz#C-R2 on the second bullet point, pointing the way to Sprint. Now, wasn't that fun? Conflipper and friends are building a database of the internal information, so head on over
and help 'em out. Because as we learn which carrier the rest of those suffixes point to,
we'll have a pretty good idea of where the Touch Diamond 2 is headed.
