Theme Thursday: HTC Slide Animated Theme For BlackBerry Storm!!

Now this is slick. Typically I don't like themes that are NOT FREE and that are mock ups of other devices such as Windows Mobile or Android. I feel like if I wanted a Windows Mobile theme, I'd have bought a Windows Mobile device, right? But this one is different. This is like a splash of HTC's TouchFlo smacked with BlackBerry branding. This theme has some serious looking animations, all compiled into a theme that flows much better then even the devices it's based on. HTC Touch Slide by KD is just simply beautiful.

Theme Thursday: Weeds w/ video downloads of the 4th season

Weeds is about a single mother named Nancy who sells drugs for a living. After the death of her husband Judah she had no source of income and decided that was it. Now, in Season Four, with the embers of Agrestic smoldering, the family relocate to the fictional beach town of Ren Mar on the San Diego/Mexico border to set up shop with a new front biz that’s… pregnant with possibilities. Leaked: OS 4.7.0.141 for the BlackBerry Storm 9500!

CrackBerry member the.abyzz dropped off a present in the forums this morning in the form of a link to an unofficial copy of OS 4.7.0.141 for the BlackBerry Storm 9500 (not 9530). The word in the forums is that RIM's internal development has now stopped on 4.7 and it's all 5.0 work from here on out, so this is likely one of the last 4.7 builds we'll see pop up for the Storm.

Global Navigation from Verizon Wireless

Ever been in Spain and had a date with your soulmate, but didn't have the slightest idea how to get to el restaurante?? Nah, me neither, but it looks like Verizon Wireless is going to be offering some GPS help to their International travelers next month(May 2009). The first device to support the new Global VZ Navigator will be the BlackBerry Storm. Verizon will be adding navigation support for the following countries in the first phase of the rollout: Mexico, Canada, France, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Austria and Belgium are some of the other countries that will be supported during its second phase.

This new feature is slated to run $19.99 a month.

Palm Centro 2

We’d all be foolish to think that the Palm Pre would be the only device to carry the brand-new webOS operating system this year. Sure enough, there will be a second device to run webOS. Palm must be trying to make a comeback. In a revamp of the semi satisfying original model, the Palm Centro 2 has been leaked On Palminfocenter. The leak claimed that the next webOS based device would indeed be designed similar to the current Centro model, but would NOT have a QWERTY keyboard. Instead, the keyboard would be replaced with a larger touchscreen to make full use of the new OS. The device would come to Sprint(like the Pre), and start selling sometime in fall 2009.

Verizon and Microsoft unite against the iPhone...until further notice!

As I posted on 4/27/09 Verizon Wireless is in talks with Apple to release the iPhone early 2010. Which is not too far-fetched since Vodafone Group, co-owner of Verizon Wireless, sells the iPhone in Europe. AT&T's exclusive rights to the iPhone in the U.S. expire next year, but rumor has it,the carrier is trying to get a one-year extension

Verizon has performed well despite not having the iPhone. On Monday, the company reported solid first-quarter results beating out AT&T in net customer additions.

Well , The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Microsoft Corp. is in discussions with Verizon Wireless to launch a touch-screen multimedia cellphone to compete with Apple Inc.'s iPhone. Apparently they are calling this SUPER secret device "Pink". "Pink" is said to include Windows Mobile cellphone operating system, adding new software capabilities. It would also likely include Microsoft's new Windows Marketplace for Mobile(a mobile application store along the lines of Apple's). We still haven't been able to catch a glimpse of "Pink" yet,but we will keep you informed.

How to remove and clean your trackball

So i get PINGed on my BB messenger today and its my friend Ekundayo. He tells me how his trackball is acting up and what can he do about it. I decided i should post this for the trackball berrys out there that experience the same problem. I posted pics to better help.

I assume this will work for all trackball models (88xx, 83xx, 81xx) but I may be wrong. It DOES work for the 88xx. The process is fairly simple but it requires some dexterity. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU COMPLETELY JACK UP YOUR BERRY. I'M JUST TELLING YOU WHAT I DID. DO NOT ATTEMPT UNLESS YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE.

So what I did/ achieved is:
A) Cleaned the Trackball so its white
B) Cleaned the insides so its not sticky
C) Colored the LED so the TrackBall is another color than white (you do not need to do this for the 81xx it has colored LEDs).

What you first need to do is remove the silver plastic ring around the trackball. What you'll need is a small screwdriver or something with a small tip. NOT A KNIFE, I repeat don't use a knife because it might damage the mechanism. I used a small phillips screwdriver.

Once off (there should be 3 prongs on the ring: left, right, bottom). Set it aside for later. You should see the trackball mechanism. To pop it out just face the Berry down and pop it out. It should just fall out easily with minimal force. Its held in by a magnet.

Now you have a clear opening to the insides (you should see the LED). Take a cotton swab with alcohol on in and clean the insides. MAKE SURE THE BERRY IS OFF!!! There you go now it should not stick.

If you want to change the color. Just take a marker. I used a sharpe and color the LED. THIS WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY.

For those who are not as crazy as me, take a Qtip and dip it in alcohol. Use it to Clean the Black rollers that are on each corner. Clean until the trackball feels smoother or until the black rollers don't have anymore lint or cotton on them.

Now if your crazy like me and want a white trackball here you go. This is where you need to be careful and very delicate. Take the trackball mechanism and look at it. You should see these black rollers that are on each corner (clean these too). To remove the trackball take off the metal ring on the top (CAREFULLY). Two halfs should separate and you should be able to remove the trackball. Now pop the trackball in vinegar and warm water and salt around half and half with a pinch of salt. Let it sit for at least an hour or two. NOTE: when you pop out the trackball the rollers might pop out too. Don't worry they can pop back in they are just tricky due to the fact its magnetic. ALSO: You have to remove the trackball out of the mechanism if your going to put it in the vinegar solution. Due to the salt. It might rust the metal ring or worse. So after you clean the trackball wash it with alcohol and pop it back in. Put the metal ring back on the right way (there are 2 ways) make sure the little holes on 2 of the sides of the metal ring are secure.


Put the mechanism back inside the BlackBerry. Put the plastic ring back on and there you go good as new. Turn it on and enjoy!!!

Obama To Get Super-Secret Blackberry 8830

Big thanks to everyone who sent this into the tips line... in January it was reported that President Obama would be keeping his Blackberry for his term in office. The rumors went up and down, but now according to the Washington Post, the President will indeed be able to keep his 8830. It appears that the NSA is going over the device to make sure its software meets "federal standards". The device will feature software called SecureVoice which will protect from hackers, eavesdroppers and spies. We don't believe President Obama actually has the device yet, but hopefully he will get it (back) soon. Props to the Prez for not giving up his Blackberry without a fight.

Apple and Verizon said to be working on an iPhone for 2010

This is pretty big news but just rumors. A new set of iPhone/Big Red rumors have emerged courtesy of USA Today. The paper has reportedly been informed by oh so typical “sources familiar with the situation” (aren’t newspapers adorable) that the iPhone is headed to Verizon in 2010 after AT&T’s exclusivity deal runs out. According to USA Today’s sources, the Verizon iPhone will run on its CDMA network — a notion that had been dismissed earlier as Verizon is planning its LTE roll out starting in 2010. Verizon’s CEO has also made it pretty clear in the past that there will never be a CDMA iPhone offered by Verizon. Then again, getting caught up in this CDMA vs LTE debate is quite irrelevant to most Americans who are more or less praying for an end to the AT&T iPhone exclusivity so that more carriers might offer popular device in the near future.

Xenozu Youtube App Launches Via App World

While browsing BlackBerry App World last night I happened to notice the Xenozu Youtube App under the Music & Video section and it appeared to be a new entry.

The application is one similar to the Youtube app currently offered by Google on the BlackBerry Storm(http://m.google.com/youtube?dc=gyt on Storm's browser). Some nice features are built in, such as being able to bookmark favorite videos and even search videos you have already watched in case you want to review your history.

Some may ask, Will it make Youtube videos look better?, the unfortunate answer is No it will not. It still connects to Youtube and looks for the mobile-converted videos which are in 3GP format, whereas the iPhone when connecting to Youtube looks for the H.264 converted versions, which also answers the question for some as to why Youtube looks better on the iPhone. The sad thing is the quality of the 3GP files is to be blamed on Youtube because in all reality 3GP files could have been just as nice quality as the H.264 files if done properly.

There are 2 different version of this app free and paid.
The free version: is the typical unlock app with no features. The free version won't activate when the screen dims out and it wont activate when you're on a call. You will have to click on the lock icon anytime you would like to use it. The free version doesn't allow the use of a password either.

Paid Version: offers a lot of features over the free version. You no longer have to click on the app icon to launch it. The app will launch by itself based on what options you have set. You can set it up to launch when you start the phone, when the screen dims out or even while you're on a call. You also have the added security of adding a password to the paid version. When ever you slide to unlock your phone you will be presented with a keypad where you must enter your 4 digit code to unlock the app.

How to Maximize Free Space on Your BlackBerry for Better Performance

Just like your desktop and laptop your BlackBerry’s performance can be significantly impacted by too much junk cluttering up the memory. So, you have to occasionally clear things up to help maximize performance. Hit the Jump for more Details...




What Causes Decreased Performance?

BlackBerries based on Java depend on what is called File Free Flash memory for most of the device’s tasks. Cluttering up that File Free Flash memory can lead to delays in many tasks as the device is spending an inordinate amount of time recovering blocks of memory, called “garbage collections.”

These Java “garbage collections” automatically reclaim file space that is no longer in use by the operating system. This process will also move around memory that is in use to combine free memory into larger memory blocks. A laptop, for example, will exchange memory onto the hard drive when it is running out of RAM. In a similar way, when the BlackBerry runs out of SRAM space, it is designed to swap memory out to the Flash memory. But if the Flash memory is also full, then the BlackBerry cannot perform that task effectively, which then causes more frequent and longer garbage collections.

The best solution to this problem is to free up space on your BlackBerry

Freeing-Up Space

Perhaps the easiest thing to do is regularly check the available memory on your BlackBerry. To do this, click on the ‘Options’ application and select “Status’ from the drop down menu. The ‘File Free’ display shows you the current amount of free data storage. The ‘File Total’ section tells you how much storage space remains after loading the Operating System, the phone, and the other basic applications.

For optimum performance it is recommended that you maintain a minimum ‘File Free’ of 400 to 500KB. This isn’t necessary, but you will find your BlackBerry performs much better if you can maintain this level.
Here are six simple solutions.

Delete Old Messages

One easy way to free up a lot of space is to delete old messages. You can change the ‘Keep Messages’ setting on the BlackBerry to 15 or 30 days, which will reduce the number of old messages taking up space in the memory. To do this, go to the ‘Messages’ application, click the trackwheel and select ‘Options.’ From that screen, click ‘General Options’ and change ‘Keep Messages’ to either 15 or 30 days. You should be aware that the BlackBerry will begin deleting older messages automatically when the memory gets low.

Change Appointments Settings

If you use your Calendar a great deal, then you might want to think about changing the ‘Keep Appointments’ setting to 15 or 30 days in order to avoid old calendar events taking up space. To change this go to the ‘Calendar’ application, click the trackwheel and select ‘Options’ from the menu. In ‘Calendar Options’ change the ‘Keep Appointments’ setting to either 15 or 30 days. This will not affect recurring appointments because the BlackBerry regards them as a single appointment.

Clear Browser Cache

Much like a regular computer, it is important to clear the browser cache often. Go to the ‘Browser’ application, click the trackwheel and select ‘Options.’ In the Browser Options screen, select ‘Cache Operations’ and click on ‘Clear Content Cache.’ This will clear the various caches.

Remove Unnecessary Applications

Remove any applications that you do not use. Most people have a few applications or programs they never use – the Memo Pad or a third party game program for example. By removing unused applications you leave more data space for applications that you use regularly. To remove unnecessary applications, click ‘Options,’ select ‘Applications’ from the menu. Scroll to the application you would like to delete, click the trackwheel and select ‘Delete.’

Slim Down Your Address Book

If it is possible, access addresses from your corporate directory. Software version 4.0 includes a Remote Address Lookup feature, which accesses contact info from the corporate address directory instead of including them in your Address Book. This feature is also available for devices that are enabled on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 3.5 or later for Microsoft Exchange, or BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 2.2 or later for IBM Lotus Domino.

You may also wish to get your IT person, or if you are brave enough yourself, to verify that the Optional Wireless Transport Layer Security (WTLS) Support component is not installed on your BlackBerry unless your service provider requires it to access their Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) infrastructure.

How to Edit Notifications & Create Profiles

A common question, "How do I change the message and email notifications on my BlackBerry?" I will walk step by step with you about profiles and provide pictures.

First off, the basics of profiles. If you click the Profiles icon on your home screen (or, if you have Dial From Home Screen set to "Off" you can simply press "F"). Here you will see the default profiles - Loud, Vibrate, Quiet, Normal, Phone Only and Off.

The Loud, Quiet and Normal is what we will be editing to our liking. The vibrate mode will silence all incoming tones, and your device will only vibrate for alerts. The Phone Only mode will silence all your email, SMS/MMS and other alerts and only the phone will ring. Off will turn off everything and silence all alerts for your device.



Scroll down to 'advanced', and select it...



On the next screen, choose the profile you want to edit. In this example, we'll do 'normal'. Press menu, then select 'edit'...


You will notice multiple items you can edit the notification for(both default and any installed 3rd party apps). Select the one you want...


On this screen, pressing the trackball will allow you to edit each field...

From here, we have the option for “Out Of Holster” and “In Holster”. These are two often confused options. “Out of Holster” means the device is not in a holster or case of any sort and is totally naked. “In Holster” means the device is in a holster or case – covered. When the device is ‘In Holster”, a small magnet in the case signals the device for a different lot of settings. (Not all cases have magnet that will signal the device).

Next to “Out of Holster” there are four options. Choose one depending on how you would like your phone to ring in this profile.

* None: Silent – no tone at all
* Tone: Device will alert based on volume/profile settings
* Vibrate: Device will vibrate but have no sound
* Vibrate + Tone: Device will vibrate before sounding the alert tone

Once you're done, pres the ESC button, and you will be given the option to save...

Creating Custom Profiles

If you have used up the default profiles and want to create another for lets say, when you're sleeping, you can always create a new profile. To do this, we return to the Advanced screen of our Profiles. Press the Menu key and select New Profile.



The next screen works just the same as the default profiles, only you can add a custom title. For this profile I will create a "Bed Mode" which will only alert me upon phone calls or SMS messages. You can create multiple custom profiles depending on your needs.
