Leaked: OS 5.0.0.314 for Bold 9000 and Curve 8900

The guys over at BerryReview got a hot tip and landed OS 5.0.0.314 for both the Bold 9000 and Curve 8900. If you've been hanging on to a buggy 5.0 build, now is your chance to upgrade. No word of any major finding or fixes for these, so be sure to leave a comment and let us know what you find out.

*OS Disclaimer - Please Read: Keep in mind this is NOT an official release and as such is not supported by RIM or your Carrier. If you choose to install, do so at your own risk and only if you're comfortable in the process of upgrading and downgrading your device software. It is quite normal during operating system development for certain features to be crippled or disabled while others are tested, and these beta builds often reflect that. They are not always better. Depending on your BlackBerry comfort level, it may be best for you to wait for community feedback on a build before deciding to download and install for yourself or simply wait for the next official release. If you require support, you will find it in our CrackBerry forums via our extremely knowledgeable community base - do not contact your carrier or RIM for Beta OS technical support (their first course of action will be to advise you to downgrade to a supported OS). Follow the links below for more information and instructions. *

Official List of BlackBerry Devices to Get OS 5.0 Update

Been wondering if the BlackBerry Smartphone you already own will be getting the OS 5.0 update everybody keeps talking about? We knew there would be a cut-off somewhere down the road of older device models and it turns out we were pretty spot on with our hunches. but now we officially know which devices are getting the update thanks to a new knowledge base article on BlackBerry's website. Keep reading to see if your device made the cut.

Supported BlackBerry Smartphones with BlackBerry Device Software 5.0

BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8200 series smartphones
BlackBerry Curve 8330 smartphones
BlackBerry Curve 8350i smartphones
BlackBerry Curve 8900 smartphones
BlackBerry Bold 9000 smartphones
BlackBerry Storm 9500 series smartphones
BlackBerry Tour 9630 smartphones
So what was the ulimate kill point? Memory. According to the article:

In order to optimize the BlackBerry smartphone user experience with BlackBerry Device Software 5.0, BlackBerry smartphones must have more than 64MB of memory to support this version of BlackBerry Device Software. BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 is targeted to be supported by Research In Motion on the above noted BlackBerry smartphones.

In the case of the BlackBerry Curve 8330, it looks like having to wait a year to get the device after the Curve was originally released paid off. The Curve 8330 has 96MB of flash memory vs. 64 in the Curve 8300, 8310, 8320. I could see it being easy to get mad if you currently are using a BlackBerry that won't get the update (especially if you recently picked up a Curve 8310/8320), but really, it just doesn't make sense to upgrade to something that'll bog your device down. At least the Bold 9700 and Storm2 are just around the corner if you're thinking it's time for an upgrade.

** It seems the new BlackBerry Curve 8520 is missing from the list above. It will for sure get the OS 5.0 update as well - they must have left it off by accident. But once there's one mistake... who knows. **

Watch Live TV On Your BlackBerry with VuiVision

While it may be a bit buggy, vuivision.com allows you to watch live streaming TV right from your device - with no catch! Simply point your browser to vuivision.com, agrees to their terms and you're done. You can currently choose from NBC, CBS or ABC. Some are reporting some sporadic usage, but give it a shot anyway (just not all at once or it may crash :-) ). The resolution isn't all that great, but it is only a few seconds behind the live feed on my TV. We'll have to see how long this service lasts (or stays free) but it definitely shows a ton of potential

BlackBerry Widgets- A Better Understanding Of What They Are

As some of you may have read, RIM recently released a brand new SDK for BlackBerry Developers. This SDK consisted of the tools needed in order to make "BlackBerry Widgets". Widget is a term we have heard used many times before in regards to the BlackBerry Smartphone platform, but this is the first time will we get to see the fulll implementation of what exactly it means to BlackBerry.

With the release of the SDK came a lot of questions - specifically revolving around the fact that users wanted to be sure these widgets were not just simply web launchers or browser homescreen links. After having spoken with Mike Kirkup, Director Of Developer Relations at RIM, I can gladly say this is not the case.

BlackBerry Widgets are something all developers should be excited about. The SDK is opening the doors to to make use of new ideas and new services which have never been available before now. This is a great time to be a BlackBerry Developer. These advancements have been a long time coming and are greatly needed.

Now, this is exciting for developer and end users alike. Developers get to harness the power of tools such as CSS, HTML, SQLite and finally, Google Gears and Javascript, and place it all in line with the BlackBerry OS. But as an end user what does this mean? It means nice, visually pleasing, feature-rich widgets on your BlackBerry that act more like applications and an integrated part of the OS.

One example would be installing a developer made widget of your favorite website on your device, opening that widget and getting the content you want pushed directly to your BlackBerry screen, all without having to pull open your web browser and refresh to see the latest news, sport scores or what have you.

It means taking your Google address book, making a widget out of it and having it appear on your device, just as it would have if you had sat at your PC and viewed it from there, because all of the tools used to create that address book are available to be used on your BlackBerry. (Think of the gmail mobile app and how it looks)nThe possibilites for feature-rich content, anything from video applications to chat applications, are endless now due to the platform integration being offered here. My examples are set up on a small scale and I'm sure many of you have much better ideas then I have outlined (I have heard some great ones already) but for the sake of simplicity I offer these.

Recently there has been increasing talk of how badly the BlackBerry OS needs a refresh. I myself have mentioned it on numerous occasions on the CrackBerry podcast. This is RIM's answer to that need as I see it, and while it may not be the drastic change that some have been hoping for, it is indeed a change that is for the greater good, and I look forward to seeing what RIM and developers can make of this innovation.

RIM Announces Widget SDK for the BlackBerry Platform

RIM has announced a new SDK for BlackBerry developers which looks and sounds promising. The new Widget platform is now available for all developers to download.. RIM has been speaking about and ramping the information about widgets for quite some time - as far back as the release of 4.5 there was indication of these things coming sooner or later. And with the BlackBerry Developers Conference and the imminent release of OS 5.0, I guess they felt now is as good a time as any to get this one on the go. From the press release:

A BlackBerry Widget uses the BlackBerry® Browser engine to render an application's user interface using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Developers are able to use existing web content to create BlackBerry Widgets and extend the capabilities of their web applications using BlackBerry Widget APIs.

Using the new BlackBerry Widget APIs, developers can, for example, create seamless interaction between a widget and the BlackBerry email and calendar applications, create widgets with the ability to view or edit files and documents stored on the smartphone, access location-based services or the media player, and more. Developers can also take advantage of RIM's unique push technology, enabling dynamic widgets that can run in the background and provide proactive alerts to users in a timely manner.

"BlackBerry Widgets open up a world of opportunities for developers to build and bring to market web applications for BlackBerry smartphones that offer advanced, integrated functionality and an always-on user experience," said Alan Brenner, senior vice president, BlackBerry platforms at RIM. "We are very excited by the prospects of this new widget development platform which combines the ease of development of standard web languages with the rich functionality of Java development."

These are some of the tools we have heard about at WES and even earlier, I'm glad to finally see this stuff get out the gates and even more excited to see how it will all be utilized in the long run. I'm just hoping that it leads to more than just simple web launcher applications which seem to be filling BlackBerry App World up. If launchers were what I needed I would have them made up by EDLIndustries.
