RIM Instant Messaging Clients See An Update

That time again, for some what appears to be random IM client updates for BlackBerry devices. RIM and their track record of never issuing a change log for their own applications still stands strong this time around as well. The above RIM-built applications are all now sitting at version 2.1.45 after having recieved their 2.1.44 status not too long ago now. Be sure to grab the updates direct from your BlackBerry browser at the RIM download site. And for the love of all things BlackBerry, if you find something new in them please share it with the rest of us in the comments. Grab the Update after the jump....

PS: Storm users, you all should find the updates as well although the version numbers will be slightly higher.

BlackBerry Storm 2: the official unofficial hands-on

SWEEET!!!! Engadget got their hands on a BlackBerry Storm 2 ("Odin") and has given it a great unofficial first hands-on look. You can click the image above to jump over for lots of photos, a video and some initial impressions. The unit they have isn't quite fully functional (apparently there's a bit of a hardware issue with the first batch of Storm 2s floating in the wild and the display isn't registering input so well, hence it won't let them click OK to the user agreement and they can't get into the OS), but they still do a great job going over some of the things we can expect in this next-generation touchscreen from RIM. Hit the Jump for more DETAILS....

Gone is SurePress (so much for that Best Mobile Technology Breakthrough award?!) and according to Engadget "it is a leap from the previous Storm incarnation with sleeker style, more heft, and a click-free display that doesn't rattle about, all of which collaborate to make the Storm 2 feel a wee bit higher end." There's been lots of talk that the Storm 2 will still feature a form of tactile feedback (True Press), but they couldn't quite put that to the test just yet.

Check out the link below for more phots and video.

Low inventory is forcing Best Buy Mobile to launch the Palm Pre in two phases

Contrary to the naysayers, looks like those rumors about Best Buy Mobile having low Palm Pre inventory are indeed true. In fact, we now know that Best Buy Mobile’s own Pre launch guide lays out a two-pronged launch: Phase 1 will be from June to July where inventory will be extremely low and marketing will be minimal. Best Buy Mobile is warning stores that “customer demand will outweigh inventory and stores may go weeks after launch with little or no replenishment.” Stores are being instructed to not sell the Pre early, not to make hold lists prior to the launch date and to limit sales to one device per customer. Sorry BBYM employees — no employee purchases until August. A ticketing system will be used to handle any lines on launch day and a running waiting list will be created when the Pre has sold out. Folks on the waiting list will get the Pre if when new shipments arrive.

Due to the low expected inventory, only 300 specially selected stores will have working demos of the Pre. The remainder of the stores will sell their entire inventory of the Pre and will not have a live phone on display. Inventory will be allotted to stores based upon their Sprint sales and their past successful launches of other high profile phones. The only good news in this launch guide is that this time of dearth is expected to be followed by a time of bounty in late July or early August when the inventory of the Pre is expected to increase. Take home message here: if you really, really want a Pre on the launch date or soon thereafter, you may have to forgo Best Buy and Radio Shack and seek out a Sprint store where Pre supplies are said to be a bit more robust.

Sprint to sell Palm Pre to a lucky few one day early

If being an early adopter means anything to you, we hope you pre-registered for a Pre. We’re hearing that, along with the Palm Pre launch party, those who pre-registered for the new device will be able to buy one on June 5 at 6:00PM. We know that major cities will be having a party for Sprint Premier customers, but not every location will host one. We’re also told that things could change, but this is the official word for now: If you pre-registered for the device, you will be able to buy one the evening before its official launch.

Rogers HTC Dream and Magic to retail for $549.99; 6GB/$30 plan might return alongside nation-wide calling plan

When Rogers Wireless announced it would be carrying both the HTC Dream (G1) and Magic this coming June, the company held back on pricing. We found out that both devices are destined to have an off contract price of $549.99. Due to Rogers’ somewhat crazy subsidization system it’s hard to say exactly how much each device will be on contract, but we’re hearing a 3-year contract could be the standard $400 off — or $149.99. We shall see.

In other Rogers news, we’re hearing Rogers is toying with the idea of a few plans that include nation-wide calling, although at this point it looks like there is only one plan on the table — 350 minutes, nation-wide evenings and weekends and 1,000 texts for $45. It’s nothing overly impressive and isn’t exactly going to offer much value to anyone (especially those in the eastern time zone) but it’s a start. Slightly more noteworthy however, Rogers is apparently planning to bring back the 6GB/$30 data promotion it introduced alongside the launch of the iPhone 3G last Summer. This will not only help move a lot of third-generation iPhones, but it will also help with every other smartphone including the Dream and Magic.

Epix win? Samsung pushes out new patch for the Epix

Epix users, it looks like it may finally be your time to shine. For those who haven’t been following the story, AT&T’s Samsung Epix had issues. Samsung pushed out a patch to resolve said issues but it only caused more issues. After promising to address the new problems in early May, Samsung has just pushed out a new ROM for the Epix that addresses the following:

*”Slog Dump” Fix: On certain circumstances, the handset may report a “Slog Dump” error message. This software provides an update to the network layer which prevents the problem from occurring.

*Missed Email Audio Notifications: A previously released cab file for notifications is now included this firmware version. This enables the EPIX to provide audible notifications alerts for your emails when the device enters an unattended power saving mode.

*Outlook Notes SSP Support: The update contains the ability to synchronize the popular Notes feature available within Microsoft Outlook.

*Ascending Ringtone: Ringtone behavior design was set to ascending/escalating volume during inbound call regardless of setting specified. With this update, the handset will act in accordance to the volume settings selected.

Users also report that the major issue brought about by the initial Slog Dump patch — phones freezing on outbound calls — is now resolved as well. Beyond that, it looks like the only old bug still present is an issue with LED notifications but with all of the other issues that have been resolved, we doubt Epix users will be too upset. Got a slogged Epix? Hit the read link to get your fix on.
