Google Developing Eyes Free Android Interface

Reports are surfacing that Google is beginning to develop an 'eyes free' interface for Android that'll allow users to adequately navigate applications without the need to actually see the input screen. This new eyes-free interface can allow visually impaired people to use Android effectively. In fact, we can even see the usefulness of an eyes free interface in normal-sighted people as well. Just imagine being able to use your phone without even looking at it!

According to T.V. Ramen, a Google researcher:

“We are building a user interface that goes over and beyond the screen,” says Raman. Often, eyes-free interfaces are employed for blind users, but Raman, who himself is blind, assures that these interfaces have much broader implications. “This is not just about the blind user,” he says. “This is about how to use these devices if you’re not in a position to look at the machine.”

Opera 9.7 Beta now available for Windows Mobile devices

As Opera continues to chip away at its competition and gain mobile market share, you can bet it’s not resting on any laurels. The software company has just released its 9.7 Beta version for Windows Mobile and promises to render pages faster and with better compression. The new version also includes Opera Widgets manager. Do note that this is still in beta and will have some issues:

Opera Turbo in Opera Mobile is still a preview-feature;
Downloads don’t work while Opera Turbo is enabled.

Some settings (such as toggle on/off images) do not apply when Opera Turbo is enabled.

On older WM 5.0 Devices with 480×800 resolution, switching between portrait and landscape may cause display errors. This is due to lack of support for this resolution in early versions of Microsoft’s driver.

Some input method editors are known not to work well with Opera because they do not comply with Microsoft’s SIP and/or IME standard. When such an editor is detected by Opera, Opera will use a known (default) input method instead. An exception is EzInput v1.5, where the phone keypad and compact QUERTY, ABC mode doesn’t work, but the rest of the modes work fine.

We recommend upgrading to EzInput v2.0 to avoid this.

Only support for FlashLite 3.x. No Flash plugin included.

A gutted Palm Pre reveals $170 worth of parts

Yesterday many people across the country eagerly waited in line to get their hands on the most anticipated handset of the year, the Palm Pre. While the overwhelming majority of people who took a Pre home with them are counting on it to be their reliable companion for the foreseeable future, the people at Rapid Repair were merely interested in taking it back to their offices and ripping it apart. So what did we learn other than the fact that disassembling a Pre is best done by people who really, really know what they’re doing? Pre components are worth about $170 — a massive leap above the iSuppli estimate of $138. In other words, it’s probably best to actually have a unit on hand before estimating its production cost. Just a thought.
