How to Edit Notifications & Create Profiles

A common question, "How do I change the message and email notifications on my BlackBerry?" I will walk step by step with you about profiles and provide pictures.

First off, the basics of profiles. If you click the Profiles icon on your home screen (or, if you have Dial From Home Screen set to "Off" you can simply press "F"). Here you will see the default profiles - Loud, Vibrate, Quiet, Normal, Phone Only and Off.

Hit the Jump for more Details...

The Loud, Quiet and Normal is what we will be editing to our liking. The vibrate mode will silence all incoming tones, and your device will only vibrate for alerts. The Phone Only mode will silence all your email, SMS/MMS and other alerts and only the phone will ring. Off will turn off everything and silence all alerts for your device.

Scroll down to 'advanced', and select it...

On the next screen, choose the profile you want to edit. In this example, we'll do 'normal'. Press menu, then select 'edit'...

You will notice multiple items you can edit the notification for(both default and any installed 3rd party apps). Select the one you want...

On this screen, pressing the trackball will allow you to edit each field...

From here, we have the option for “Out Of Holster” and “In Holster”. These are two often confused options. “Out of Holster” means the device is not in a holster or case of any sort and is totally naked. “In Holster” means the device is in a holster or case – covered. When the device is ‘In Holster”, a small magnet in the case signals the device for a different lot of settings. (Not all cases have magnet that will signal the device).

Next to “Out of Holster” there are four options. Choose one depending on how you would like your phone to ring in this profile.

* None: Silent – no tone at all
* Tone: Device will alert based on volume/profile settings
* Vibrate: Device will vibrate but have no sound
* Vibrate + Tone: Device will vibrate before sounding the alert tone

Once you're done, pres the ESC button, and you will be given the option to save...

Creating Custom Profiles

If you have used up the default profiles and want to create another for lets say, when you're sleeping, you can always create a new profile. To do this, we return to the Advanced screen of our Profiles. Press the Menu key and select New Profile.

The next screen works just the same as the default profiles, only you can add a custom title. For this profile I will create a "Bed Mode" which will only alert me upon phone calls or SMS messages. You can create multiple custom profiles depending on your needs.

HTC Touch Pro2 gets thoroughly handled overseas

While we still don't have an official release date for HTC's Touch Pro2 here in the states, the folks at Russian site Mobile-Review have managed to get some extensive hands-on time with the unit. Props go to the quality of the voice calls and especially the QWERTY keyboard, noted via the machine translation as one of the most user-friendly in modern mobile devices. The same is not said here, however, for the plastic casing and steep pricing. They also don't really touch on TouchFlo 3D 2.0.XX -- that's apparently coming later in another article -- but hit up the read link for a plethora of pictures and a video of the updated UI in action.

FCC greenlights the Sony Ericsson W995

Despite the recent wave of ho-hum handsets, Sony Ericsson’s W995 is one of a select few feature phones alot of people been secretly lusting after since it was announced back in February. Once known as the Hikaru, the W995 will be SE’s first Walkman phone to get in on the 8 megapixel action. The specs as you may recall, are pretty respectable — highlighted by the 8.1 megapixel shooter, 8GB of internal memory, 2.6-inch QVGA scratch-resistant screen, aGPS, Wi-Fi, stereo speakers and Walkman player 4.0 accompanied by dedicated media buttons. There is some bad news in all this however; this FCC approval makes no mention of the 850/1800/1900 MHz WCDMA bands we’re all looking forward to in the North American W995a. In fact, it doesn’t mention any WCDMA testing, though it does list the phone as HSPA-capable. As such, we’ll have to assume this is the Euro variant and we’ve got a bit more waiting to do before the North American version finally makes its way through the approval process.

Understanding Profiles on your Blackberry

Understanding Profiles:
Your BlackBerry is highly customizable - everything from Ringtones to vibrations to LED notifications can be adjusted. Traveling on an airplane but sill want to use your calendar or play a game without disturbing others? No problem. In a meeting and don't want the phone to ring - but you do want some sort of notification when an email comes in? No problem.

Virtually any scenario you can imagine can be dealt with preemptively by adjusting the profile settings.

Basic Profile Settings:
By default, the BlackBerry is set to a "Normal" profile - meaning that when a call comes in, the phone rings and when a message comes in, the phone plays a tune.

Changing your Profile:
Depending you your selected Theme and BlackBerry carrier (Phone Company), how you get to your profiles icon will be slightly different.

If you don't see this speaker icon on your screen, press the Menu key to see the entire list of icons, then scroll to the "Profiles" icon and click on it.

Seven basic ‘preset' settings are available from which you can choose: Normal, Loud, Medium, vibrate, Silent, Phone only and Off. Next to one of those options the word "Active" will be displayed. For most users, "Normal" will be the active profile which rings during phone calls and either vibrates or plays a tone when a message arrives. "Loud" increases the volume for all notifications. "Vibrate" enables a short vibration for meetings, movies or other places where cell phone rings are discouraged. "Silent" will display notifications on the display and via the LED. "Phone Only" will turn off all email and SMS notifications. "Off" will turn off all notifications.

Later today i will show you guys How to Create and Edit Profiles and Notifications

BlackBerry 9630 to be Branded the BlackBerry Tour?!

All BlackBerry smartphone codenames must come to an end, except of course in the case of RIM's touchscreen where the "Storm" codename stuck. But in the case of the "Niagara" I think that name is eventually going to die.
