How To Manually Install Android 1.5 Cupcake Without Rooting Your Device

Some Android owners are beginning to lose their patience with the whole Android 1.5, Cupcake, T-Mobile US, T-Mobile G1 debacle. A lot of them have been waiting for months (some of you since the very beginning!) to get the update and T-Mobile continues to delay the release of Cupcake.

So if you're sick of waiting and eager to try out Cupcake, there is a workaround that allows you to manually update your G1 to Android 1.5. Hit the Jump for more Details...

Don't worry, there's no root access required and it's a relatively straightforward process. How this particular method works is it uses the UK version of Android 1.5 to install onto your US T-Mobile G1. And according to multiple users, it really does work (with some sacrifices).

Here's how:

1. Head over to the T-mobile Forums to download the UK version of Android 1.5 Cupcake
2. Put the downloaded file into your SD card
3. Turn ur phone off and re-boot it holding the home button
4. When you see the triangle hit alt+L
5. Then alt+S
6. Press home and back when it tells you to (to reboot your phone)
7. It'll say installing Radio after you hit home+back (thats normal)
8. It'll reboot a couple times and after you see the new Android loading screen,
you've got Cupcake.
9. When Android 1.5 for the US comes out repeat the process with the US download

Note: if you do decide to use this method to get Cupcake, know that you'll be missing a few US-specific features such as: Voice Search, Native Chat, Amazon MP3, etc. We're also not sure on whether the Android Market in this process will be the UK version or the US. Otherwise, you can test drive Cupcake to see if it measures up to everything you've been waiting for.

The official T-Mobile US release should be coming out soon! Hopefully this method can keep you guys from storming T-Mobile's offices and demanding Cupcake.

And, finally, renders of AT&T's Touch Pro 2 & Touch Diamond 2

Ask and ye shall receive, dear readers. While these are "just" renders and not the in-the-flesh mockups we've seen of the T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon Touch Pro 2s, what we've got here are renders of what supposedly will be coming to AT&T, courtesy of Engadget. Hit the Jump for more Details...

The purloined spec slides are after the break, but everything's about what we've been told, save for launch dates, of course. And we'd expect the home buttons you see on here on the Touch Pro 2 (Fuze 2?) and Touch Diamond 2 to most likely be replaced by the Windows flag button. Also interesting is that AT&T finally may be going with the Diamond line after passing on the original iteration.

And in case there were any confusion that HTC phones get coolest code names out there, the Touch Pro 2's been dubbed the Fortress, and the TD2's the Warhawk.

GP2X Game Emulator for Android is Simply AMAZING -- VIDEO

As much as people love the Android platform, we never seriously considered it a big gaming device--the market for gaming just didn't seem to take off for Android. Well, we might have to change our stance after watching a video showcasing the GP2X Game Emulator for Android. Hit the Jump for more Details...

The video shows games such as Street Fighter II, Marvel vs Street Fighter, Super Mario World, Samurai Showdown, and much more being played on the G1. The GP2X can handle games from MAME, SNES, Sega Genesis, Game Gear and more. It is simply amazing.

The GP2X game emulator is currently only in its alpha stages so there is still quite some time before we see an official launch. But wow.

AT&T Confirms Considering Lowering iPhone Data Plans… Maybe!

Reuters (via Ars) has word from Ralph de la Vega, the head of AT&T’s mobility and consumer business. Hit the Jump for more Details...

*“Right now we continue to study what is the best thing that is available, not just
from an iPhone point of view, but what you can do to stimulate additional demand,”

*“Our business is to sell services,” he said, adding that AT&T doesn’t make money
from the sale of devices like the iPhone, which it subsidizes heavily

*“We view Apple as a strategic partner for us, a very good partner to have now and
into the future,”

Like the old joke goes, if you ask someone if they’ve considered something — bang! — you just made them consider it. So, yeah, AT&T has considered making iPhone data cheaper… but we still don’t know if they’ll actually do anything about it.
