Palm Pre: Chapter 11 of Palm webOS Rough Cuts Now Available

Chapter 11 of the O'Reilly Palm webOS Rough Cuts is available now - and you keep all those bankruptcy jokes to yourself. Heck, Appendix A is available now as well (thanks jbern8!). Since we missed reporting on Chapter 10, which is also available, we'll give you a quick run down of what to expect in both.

Hit the Jump for more Details...

The tenth chapter is perhaps one of the most important, covering Background Applications:

Whether you're interested in building an advanced application or just want to add notifications to a basic application, this chapter covered some essential topics. There was a broad review of advanced multi-stage applications with an introduction to Notifications and Dashboards. You learned that advanced applications are based on an Application assistant, which can handle external launch requests and potentially run in the background. You were also shown how to customize your application's behavior when minimized, meaning switched out of the foreground view, and how to use the internal application notification chain to coordinate actions between assistants or share events and data.

As for Chapter 11, Localization and Internationalization (yep, thats a word) is the name of the game.

In this chapter, you will GET an overview of the framework's locale support and learn how to localize your application. We will localize the News application to Spanish and we will walk through each step of the localization process. In the last section, we'll cover some of the Internationalization APIs available in Mojo.

Between what we know of the leaked SDK, and what's being published in Rough Cuts, the webOS platform is shaping up to be a-plenty powerful, and certainly seems to be giving developers the freedom they need to develop quality applications. Let us know what you think in the comments!

Pre gets Playstation and Mame Emulators

Zodttd has worked up an operational Playstation One emulator for the Palm Pre, as you can see above.  Sound, rotation, scaling aren't quite working yet, but the good news is that it's actually beating out the iPhone 3GS in performance so far. It's all part of the psx4all project and it's hot.  We can't wait to see this thing get a wider release.

If the PSOne isn't old school enough for you, how about some MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator)? Nebula (who has previously worked up the Pre as a Webserver) has one up and running and sound here is working, albeit choppily.

All we need now is a full-fledged Turbografx-16 emulator and the circle will be complete.  Actually, all kidding aside, this is all great work and makes us hopeful for the day when Palm can release a 2nd SDK that allows for more direct-to-the-metal coding so official emulators can get working.

O2 Wins Exclusive on Pre in UK, Announcement in one week?

The Pre is expected to be announced in the UK very soon, with O2 as the carrier.  The first bit of news comes to us from T3 [via Engadget Mobile], who says that Palm themselves have confirmed that there will be an announcement from them in the UK next week - we're waiting on an official word from Palm on that subject.

As we speculated earlier this week, it does appear that O2 will be the exclusive carrier for the Palm Pre in the UK.  That latest from the Guardian, who also notes that they were "in fierce competition from Orange" for the Pre exclusivity deal. Carphone Warehouse is also expected to carry the device.

Pricing, release date, and more are unknown.  The biggest unknown --
how difficult will this Pre be to unlock and will Palm offer an unlocked version?

iPhone 3GS Real Racing Tech Demo

Firemint has put up the above video tech demo of their Real Racing game running optimized for an iPhone 3GS and…. wow.

“Since the game uses a high fidelity physics engine, adding cars is a good test for pushing the hardware. We started our tech demo with 8 cars on the track, then 10, 12, 16 and 20, and the 3GS still didn’t break a sweat,” wrote Firemint’s Alexandra Peters. “We finally stopped when we got to 40 cars on the track at the same time, still with no perceptible drop in frame rate. We think the results are mind blowing.”

No plans to release an iPhone 3GS version yet but again, that’s a switch that some developer will no doubt throw at some point.

Calc-12E RPN Financial Calculator

Ever run a TVM calculation then wonder if you put the right numbers in? I still have to go to the laptop to generate a schedule for the client and so on. Ah, it was great for the 80s though.

But hey, we're nearly a decade into the 21st century. This app, Calc-12E, addresses many limitations of the 12C while preserving intact the way you operate the calculator. Absolutely, if you need step-by-step HP-12C emulation for finance class or B-school, Calc-12E works exactly like the real thing. And if you're adept already, you already know your way around.

Except.

Hit the Jump for more Details...

Calc-12E keeps adding new capabilities, like allowing me to work with three cash flow scenarios at a time, and see the investment metrics all at once.

It has a visual cash flow editor that presents your cash flows as a cash flow diagram from which you can edit amounts, insert new cash flows, delete others and most importantly; check your numbers. You can still use RCL-G-Cj if you like, but look at the screenshots so see what the cash flow experience should be.

It will display numbers with up to 13 decimal places, not the 10 total digits we're used to... 13 places *after* the decimal point. Plenty of precision for bonds.

Use the stack alot? Toggle between showing the stack and TVM registers with a tap.

And for recording or sharing results you can email the results of your calculations--including a complete amortization schedule and investment comparison report. The emails are tab delimited so they import directly into your spreadsheet, are in plain text format so they are human readable, and they paste just fine into your word processor.

Undo. Only one level, but it's one more level than was coded into the original.

Oh... it's really, really fast. The 11 cash flow example on page 70 of the 12C's manual takes the 12C about 30 seconds to solve. The same problem is run by Calc-12E almost before your finger leaves the screen. Literally. I made a YouTube movie--search for CALC12E or swing by the product website.

Be aware, it is not programmable so if you love to key in your own programs do not throw out your 12C. But extras have been added: leasing, rate conversion (APR and ER), and MIRR are "pre-programmed" for you. Ok, so that doesn't completely make up for not being able to key in and debug 1 or 2 custom programs but it's something!

Obviously, features don't mean much if the underlying math isn't up to the task. Calc-12C's financial algorithms were re-written expressly for the iPhone/iPod touch and correctly solve all of the tough problems as well or better than the original. Being able to trust the answers is not a negotiable specification. Never has been.

The iPhone and iPod touch made it possible to move beyond the limitations the 80s placed on your 12C. Calc-12E removes those limitations so you again have a brilliant tool -- and your 12C can finally retire. It's earned it.
New in this version COMPARATIVE INVESTMENT ANALYSIS! Now you can work with up to three independent cash flow scenarios and compare the investment metrics (NPV, IRR, MIRR, FMRR and capital multiplication) side-by-side. The new INVEST mode speeds entry of cash flows (no more BLUE/g key), computes and shows "live" the 5 investment metrics while using the visual cash flow editor, and generates a comprehensive comparative results report for emailing. Capital multiplication is brand new and unique. To help evaluate an opportunity against a common exit strategy, it uses information generated by FMRR to produce the factor by which an initial investment will multiply by the end of the holding period. For example, 6x gain was a popular threshold for obtaining venture capital and it use to require additional effort to determine how an opportunity stacked up.

Amortization tables generated for email are produced using accepted industry standard practice.

General maintenance and minor fixes are included as well.

Well, while the completed version may yet be a ways off in the meantime you can grab the latest beta in all it's glory. I have downloaded the Beejive Storm betas before and was never quite impressed, they were always full of bugs that I really just could not understand even why they were not fixed beforehand but this time around the beta is much more polished.
